Fancy

Around 2 o'clock today I'm sitting at my desk fighting the intense desire for an afternoon snooze. Since caffeine is really the only solution to that kind of an issue I decided to make a quick McDonald's run (fabulous ice coffee).

Everything about the experience is typical until the obviously new middle aged trainee looks up at me and says, "fancy".

As one of my co-workers so wisely put it in between giggles hours later, "Megan I love your reaction when people say strange things to you. You get really flustered and never know what to say."

A perfect description of what transpired after the lovely McDonald's man called me "fancy" for the first time. Granted...I was working and therefore wearing a suit, but is business attire considered fancy?

After the awkward laugh on my part he says, "You're not from around here are you?" I say, "Um...I live here" before breaking eye contact as quickly as possible. He wasn't finished.

"Yes but you're not from here are you?" What else could I say? "No".

"I knew it, people around here have a very distinct look," he says. At this point there's no doubt in my mind my eyes look quite similar to those of a deer in headlights. "You from California then?" he asked as I nervously scan the kitchen for my ice coffee. "No, not California," I say.

'God be praised' I think as the woman sets my drink on the counter. I grab it and distinctly here him say, "fancy" one more time before I'm out the door.

Oh Idaho....

  1. Dear Fancy,

I know that weird, uncomfortable look you give...lol! Maybe he was referencing Reba's song, "Fancy."
